What I Am Reading

The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries can be such a daunting read that I feel the need to take a break from it every now and then. At over 500 pages long it is going to take me quite a while to get through. Add to the fact that I am highlighting  the parts I find of interest it might take me the rest of the year to finish this book. Don't get me wrong, I love this book and am enjoying the research, it just that I need a little break from it.

Over the weekend I found a couple of books for my Kindle that were for download. Sadly, when I checked today, they are no longer free unless you are a prime member. Both books are from David Rankine & Sorita D'Este. I have their book The Guises of The Morrigan: Irish Goddess of Sex & Battle. This is one of my favorite books on The Morrigan. I love all the research and dedication they put into their books.

Here are the books I downloaded and am currently reading:

Horns of Power: Manifestations of the Horned God: An anthology of essays exploring the Horned Gods of myth and folklore, ancient history through to modern times.

Some of the Horned Gods that are covered in this book are: Cernunnos, Herne, Pan, Veles, Puck and more. There are rites and prayers included and even a section of the Horned Goddess. I am only a few chapters in and am loving the fact that so many different gods are represented in this book.

The Cosmic Shekinah: A Historical Study of the Goddess of The Old Testament and Kabbalah

Some of the Ancient Goddesses covered in this book are: Innana, Ma'at, Isis, Astarte, Asherah, Aphrodite and more. I can't wait to start reading this one. I have a feeling it is going to take me on an adventure into many different lands introducing me to some goddesses I have never met before. I'll keep you updated on what I find.

The other book I am reading is one that I had to buy. The cover art pulled me in and i like the writing so much that I will probably order his other book.

Fairy Tale Rituals: Engage the Dark, Eerie & Erotic Power of Familiar Stories by Kenny Klein

I love this book. It is not you Disney characters that are covered but the Grimm stories. They are dark and enchanting tales of love, sex and death. I am on the first chapter and i had a very hard time putting this book down last night.

A few of the chapter titles:

Chapter 1
Snow-White: The Nymph; A Ritual for Sexual Attraction

Chapter 2
Snow-White and Red-Rose: Connecting With Your Totem Animal

Chapter 3
Hansel and Gretal: Faerie Mirror Magic

Chapter 7
Little Red Cap (Little Red Riding Hood): Spells For Preventing Unwanted Attention

I think I might skip to chapter 7 if the creepies don't stop hitting on me. LOL

The last book I am reading poetry. Rock and Hawk: A Selection of Shorter Poems by Robinson Jeffers ~Edited by Robert Hass

This wonderful book was recommended to me by Keith from laughing scared. I will be sure to share some of this brilliant poetry soon.

It seems that I have a lot of reading to do. It's a rainy here today making it a perfect day for reading.

What book or books are you reading?

  1. I jumped at the chance to get The Horns of Power for free. Loved the Guises of the Morrigan, but the other books I will look into. Right now I am reading 'Wheel of Initiation' by Julie Tallard Johnson. It is a journey through the Medicine Wheel using Native American, Buddhism, Taoism, Shamanism and Christianity philosophies.

  3. Good Morning Viv! :)

I'm reading Priestess of Avalon right now and loving it, by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Diana L. Paxson. I started out reading The Mists of Avalon and was hooked. I'd never read anything like these before.
The Fairy Tale Rituals sounds like good reading to me...you'll have to let me know how you liked it.
    Mary's book sounds good too.
It is a good day for reading where I live too...very cloudy, misty, foggy, spitting ice kind of day and turning to snow later. Some of our big snow melted overnight from the rains...I see my Grandaughter's Snow Lady is slowly melting too...her flowerhat fell off! He He He
It was good to hear your voice today...have fun with your day and happy reading Sister! :)

Guy de Maupassant... and others ( one that I liked was "The Spider of Guyana" by Erckmann-Chattrain) I am currently reading the story "The Friend of Death" by Pedro Antonio de Alarc'on... All of these stories date back to the end of the 1800's... all in a first edition paperback printed in 1971

  7. All those books sound so cool! The fairy tale one sounds very interesting to me at the moment because I'm completely hooked on 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Grimm'. I have such a huge pile of books to read, but I've been so busy lately that sadly I haven't had much time for reading. I have to try and rectify that state of affairs!

  8. That's a great reading list, especially the fairy tale one. It's always interesting to see the different interpretations of the tales that different authors give.

When I was in college I took a class about the origins of fairy tales and found that most are based on folklore that is grounded in truth. The wicked queen in 'Snow White' is based on the vile Countess Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian Countess who, in the late 1500's, murdered more than 600 young girls over a period of thirty years and bathed in their blood because she thought it kept her young.

  11. Finally got my post corrected ( had to go through over 550 posts ...many of which had to be "fixed") ...just finished up today....
Now running Windows XP.... and have the Sims 2 game reinstalled ( Now to install all my downloads and re-establish my former neighborhoods) My "Sims" were mostly horror-based characters and assorted comic book "super Villains" roaming about.... I would normally "kill-off" most any of the "normal" people ...often raising them from the dead as "zombies".... Many hours of something to do to take my mind off of my troubles... My favorite "diversion"....

  20. Hi Victoria

The Countess Bathory is my favorite "vampire". I have a book on real vampires and she is in it. That woman was quite mad. i can't believe her family let her gat away with it for so long.

I think you would like Fairy Tale Rituals.

Sometimes it's the covers that lead to an awesome book. So far this book is living up to it's cover art. Hope you are enjoying your mags.
