To Be Eaten By A Vulture

My blogger friend, Keith, over at laughing scared, sent me a wonderfully morbid poem. I had made a comment on his post about being obsessed with not dying that reminded him of this poem. I had stated that when i die i want my body to be put in a tree so the crows and vultures could pick me clean. My bones can be worshipped afterwards by those who care. LOL. It is the truth, I would rather feed the Earth than to be put in a metal box to just lie there and rot. What fun is that. I want to soar in my next life.

Thank you Keith, for introducing me to another great poet. By the way, you have one of the best headers for a blog. My oldest can't even look at it.

Hope you all enjoy the poem as much as I do.

Vulture by: Robinson Jeffers

I had walked since dawn and lay down to rest on a bare hillside
Above the ocean. I saw through half-shut eyelids a vulture wheeling
high up in heaven,
And presently it passed again, but lower and nearer, its orbit
narrowing,
I understood then
That ii was under inspection. I lay death-still and heard the flight-
feathers
Whistle above me and make their circle and come nearer.
I could see the naked red head between the great wings
Bear downward staring. I said,"My dear bird, we are wasting time here.
These old bones will still work; they are not ready for you." But how
beautiful
he looked, gliding down
On those great sails; how beautiful he looked, veering away in the sea-light
over the precipice. I tell you solemnly
that I was sorry to have disappointed him. To be eaten by that beak
and
become part of him, to share those wings and those eyes--
What a sublime end to ones body, what an enskyment, what a life
after death.

  6. Vivienne, your friend's blog's banner is scary, but good! I loved the poem! And, you are so right, about having your body left out for the animals, so you can feed the earth. I totally agree ;o) Blessings my friend ;o)

  7. I've always liked vultures. They never kill, they eat only carrion. Such a useful, wonderful service they perform.

  8. Hi Reina

Donating your body to science is a great idea. There are so many things that can be done after you die to help out the world. To me, that is Everlasing Life.

  9. Hi Dr. Theda

Didn't mean to creep you out. Worms need to eat too.LOL. I would rather have them than spiders. I fear spiders with a passion.

    Blessings my friend, Lady Moss

  10. Hi Queenie

There was a civilization in the celtic lands that lived by the sea. They would leave their dead out on a rock to let the Sea Eagles eat them. They would then put the bones in an underground chamber and consult them in times of need. I saw this on the History channel a few years ago and have always liked that idea.

  11. Hi MAgic Love Crow

Yes, it is very scary. If my girls are in the room and i visit his blog, i have to scroll down very fast so they don't see it.

I wish we could be "burried" like that. To feed the Earth would be an awesome ending to my awesome life.

    Hugs and Blessings, V.

  12. Hi Victoria

Think of all the roadkill that would be around if it were not for our carrion friends. I thank them for their service. They are better at cleaning up than some humans.

    Blessings, V.

  13. This poem embodies everything I am about too Vivienne. I do want to be on a scaffold above the earth for the winged ones to take my body...in the ways of my Ancestors.

I never have understood why people want to enshrine themselves in cement and metal and pollute Mother Earth...I had thought about cremation as well until I read more about how it pollutes too. Either put me in a cardboard box to be buried so that I decompose naturally or put me on a scaffold...

This was a GREAT SHARING! :) Thank You! :)

  14. Hi Akasa

How awesome is it that we think alike. Cardboard box it will have to be unless we fight to legalize other types of "Green" burial.

I am very happy you liked my post!!

Big Hugs and many Blessings my dear Siter/ Friend, V.

  15. It's wonderful to know so many people feel the same as I do about being eaten by birds after I die.
I, too, have a fear of being buried - or incinerated. What a waste that would be, when my discarded body could feed other creatures!

    Brilliant poem Vivienne :)
